Hello from the bottom of the world!

A first dispatch from New Zealand.

We flew in to Auckland, and had a mad dash with our bags to the domestic terminal…

and then an hour-long flight over snow-capped volcanoes and whatnot into Nelson.

Day 1, we mostly recovered from the flight, wandering town and napping. Today (that’s “tomorrow” to you folks in the USA), we drove down the coast to a place called the Farewell Spit, from which I’ll refrain from adding punch lines. The drive, over mountains that were at time reminiscent of both the Pacific Northwest and the Rockies, was insanely gorgeous…

Out on Farewell, we got to see seal pups and baby lambs at the same time – which pretty much made Rachel’s head explode from all the cuteness. We also got to explore caves near the ocean.

Also, we were really close to the South Pole!
